Hot Weather Concreting

Chilled water, flake ice and pre-cooled aggregate hold placement temperature below 26 °C in 50 °C ambient conditions.

With ambient temperatures reaching almost 50 °C across the region, it is necessary to control the temperature of concrete to maintain specification compliance. Uncontrolled placement temperature accelerates set, reduces workability, drives plastic shrinkage cracking and compromises long-term strength.

We use modern chilling technology to produce both chilled water and flake ice through on-site production facilities that feed directly into the concrete batching plant.

Aggregate storage areas are shaded and the materials pre-cooled using water mist spray systems, so the concrete starts cool rather than being cooled after the fact.

The use of 100% chilled water at 5 °C together with the addition of shaved ice and plasticising retarders allows us to produce concrete that arrives on site at a temperature typically below 26 °C, even through the peak of summer.

Typical applications

  • Summer pours across all structural elements
  • Mass concrete rafts and pile caps
  • Long-distance and high-lift pumped placements
  • Specification-limited placement temperature works
